last night during the debate did bring up alternative energy let's take a listen to what he had to say. on energy governor romney and i we both agree that we've got to boost american energy production and oil and natural gas production are higher than they've been in years but i also believe that we've got to look at the energy source of the future like wind and solar and biofuels and make those investments. and of course right now an energy dependence that's being talked about also the issue of jobs are being talked about that's what some people say that's the number one issue and is this if we do put these regulations on coal could it could that lead to job losses. well you know whenever there's a shift in energy use you're going to see a shift in where people are employed right now we're seeing a shift to natural gas because we're finding more plentiful supplies that still need to be developed in an environmentally responsible way and we have a long way to go on that but to suggest that we have to have air pollution and water pollution and threats to our kids in our seniors and in o

mitt romney is the clear winner of last night's debate, even i'm co conceding the obama loss. we all agree on this. the real question on moving forward is weather romney's win will change the race. we've seen mondale outperform president raleigh in 1984 and with john kerry defeated bush. neither kerry or mondale translated that into an election night win, although steve kornacki likes to think about a potential mondale president history. as the dust settles, they're back on the trail today. obama is en route to a rally in wisconsin, but earlier today in denver supporters saw the obama we hoped to see last night. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. he said that he doesn't even know that there's such laws that encourage outsourcing, never heard of them. he said if it's true, he must need a new accountant. we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney, because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant. thank goodness somebody is finally getting tough on big bird. it's about time. >> that guy's a winner.

president obama was saying something the other day, i'm not really a good debater. gee -- >> they're both very, very smart guys. >> if you talk about the top 1%, intellect, these guys are in the top 1%. there's nothing to choose between them on intellect. there's a lot to choose between them on policy. i hope they get into a good discussion of policy because from my point of view i think romney would get the better of that but i'm not sure. we'll see. >> we looked at past debates. some folks seem to get into trouble when they start debating over the debate rules themselves. i want to play a quick montage of stuff. >> i have to let senator obama respond. go ahead and respond. >> wait -- >> you just spoke for two minutes. >> you said two things. >> you can dispute that but let me finish. you went on for two minutes. let me finish. >> i'm speaking. i'm speaking. i'm speaking. i'm speaking. you get 30 seconds. this is the way the rules work here, is that i get 60 seconds and then you get 30 seconds to respond, right? anderson? >> you say that you knew -- >> would you pl

this week the etch-a-sketch came alive during his debate with president obama. he got away with it. he keeps this act up or will we have to fight a tougher fight with obama in the next rounded? michael steele is here with us and cynthia tucker is here as well. thank you, cynthia and michael, there's an old tradition in politics you go to the fringe or hard left or right to win the caucuses and start to move slowly, the big battleship around so by labor day you're ready to confront the enemy at the center. he didn't do that. he stayed right through the summer and masterfully, wednesday, started to go i'm for pre-existing condition coverage, i'm for education and all this good stuff. >> i think part of that, you're right, in your analysis there. that's what happens politically. i think for the romney campaign they took that strategy, elongated it because they had shoring up to do with their base. >> can you pull it off? can you make that switcharoo in september. >> i think you can. >> or october rather. >> i think you can. number one. number two, we saw obama do the same thing. he was
